Sidmouth is lucky to have such a fine green public space as Connaught Gardens, and in Spring, dappled light filters through the foliage, making this season a great time to visit. As the gardens overlook the sea directly, it is rare to get a still day, which means close-up flower photography is often challenging. On this shoot, however, I was relatively lucky, as whilst there was a breeze, it was both intermittent and not that strong – unusually favourable for Connaught!
On the rare occasions that the Dorset Coast's weather is kind, you have to stock up on pictures. And in winter light, this area of the south coast looks stunning. The variety of these beaches is also amazing; Charmouth's somewhat desolate beach is in great contrast to West Bay's golden beach and unique cliffs. The geology is also fascinating – it's remarkable to think that West Bay's cliffs are made of 185 million-years-old sand.
Exmouth’s sea-front is always a good place for a stroll on a sunny winter’s evening, even if only for the winter lights that illuminate it throughout the majority of the coldest, darkest part of the year. And whilst the lights are merely a pleasant addition for most people – walking dogs, jogging and cycling – for the photographer, these lights are a significant and beautiful addition. Not that the lights were the only thing that featured in this shoot...
